About LWV
The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate. The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.
Voters Service/Citizen Education: We present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues. We make voting easier through voter education programs. The LWV Education Fund is a non-partisan nonprofit public policy educational organization, which:
- Builds citizen participation in the democratic process.
- Studies key community issues at all government levels in an unbiased manner.
- Enables people to seek positive solutions to public policy issues through education and conflict management.
Donations to the Education Fund, a 501(c)(3)corporation, are fully tax-deductible where allowed by law.
Action/Advocacy: After careful study, LWV takes positions on certain issues. We use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest.
Positions result from a process of study. Any given study, whether it be National, State, or Local, is thorough in its pursuit of facts and details. The study leads to discussion of pros and cons, then consensus questions considered by the membership.
A consensus statement can result from the consensus questions, leading to a formal position. Firm action or advocacy can then be taken on the particular issue addressed by the position. Without a position, action/advocacy cannot be taken.
