SUNSHINE WEEK IN MICHIGAN, March 16-22, 2025

Sunshine Week is a bipartisan initiative that brings together journalism, civic engagement, education, government, and private sector organizations to emphasize the importance of citizens’ right to access public records and advocate for a more transparent and open government.

According to the Michigan Press Association (MPA), Michigan is one of two states that exempts its Legislature and governor from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), a federal law that states the public has the right to request access to federal government records. Several states have “Open Records Acts” or “Sunshine Laws” that apply at the state level. Despite the recent passage of FOIA reform, Michigan has yet to enact such a law.
