Activities & Volunteer Opportunities

Voter Service Election Activities

This is a core LWV service. Volunteers plan and organize candidate forums, create on-line and printed voter guides, and educate voters about elections. These are fun team activities.

Candidate forums and voter guides are the two services most often appreciated by the local community.

Join the League and you will receive the training, mentoring and support to provide these valuable community voter services.

Observer Corps

Observer Corps volunteers attend local governmental meetings to observe, summarize, and report back to the League and the community. This project strengthens citizens’ right-to-know about local officials and their official decisions. It is a valuable opportunity to learn about county, city, and township governments. It helps the League build relationships with local officials and prepare to ask topical questions in voter guides and candidate forums. Learn more in the Observing Your Government in Action Handbook

If you are interested in preserving open government and freedom of information for citizens, becoming a LWV Observer Corps volunteer is the opportunity for you.

Voter Registration and Education

League members are trained about voter registration so they can help eligible citizens register.

Volunteers attend community events and activities, go to local high schools, and participate in NMU campus events to register new voters and share information about voting, voting rights, and upcoming elections.

This has been one of the most popular volunteer activities that has attracted many of our members.

Environmental Committee Activities

The mission of our Environmental Committee is to educate and increase civic engagement and awareness of our League members and residents of Marquette County to promote responsible stewardship of our precious natural resources and protect life sustaining ecosystems for future generations.  Members participate statewide in monthly LWVMI Environmental Network meetings, and quarterly meetings of the Climate Action Task Force (CATF) of Marquette County. A Local League member serves on the LWVUS Climate Action Plan Team which is a team within the LWVUS Climate Interest Groups.  The Environmental Committee coordinates tours and presentations to assist membership in deepening their understanding and awareness of Marquette County infrastructure (power, waterworks, water treatment, solid waste, recycling, etc), along with tours and presentations of important regional industries such as mining.

Community Education, Events and Marches

League volunteers build floats, create signs, walk in parades, and march at events, which raises awareness about the League and shares important voter service information. Community education includes visiting local civic clubs and groups to talk about LWV, generally, and to present voting and election issues. Extensive training and support is available, including presentation materials. Many League members also enjoy volunteering to set up event venues, coordinate the publicity, and greet and welcome people at the events.

Celebrations and Fun Events

This is where League volunteers relax, have fun, and get to know one another. Enjoy a movie, celebrate an accomplishment, or share a pizza — and get to know your local League members.
