The LWV of Marquette County presents the “Making Democracy Work” Award to Brian Prill, Marquette Alternative High School Teacher

The League of Women Voters of Marquette County presented the “Making Democracy Work” Award to Brian Prill, a social studies, Spanish, and construction/work readiness teacher at Marquette Alternative High School.

Prill’s enthusiasm for sharing the importance of voting and the democratic process with his students can be seen in his teaching philosophy, which is grounded in the belief that a strong democracy must equally value vocational training and academics. This belief is why he has spent the past several years involving all of his students in projects to make the district, the Marquette community, and the world a better place.

For example, Prill and his students saw the installation and final touches to the four-year solar power project at Marquette Alternative High School last fall. You can read more about the project in the Mining Journal: https://www.miningjournal.net/news/front-page-news/2025/09/marquette-alternative-high-school-finishes-solar-project/

The LWV created the “Making Democracy Work” Award to recognize and celebrate citizens who demonstrate committed, visionary leadership that strengthens our democracy. We were pleased to select Prill for this award for his commitment to strengthening democracy locally by sharing the power of voting with students, including its history and process, and for fostering active civic engagement by including his students in community development projects.
